FlashPhos: The complete thermochemical recycling of sewage sludge
Elemental white phosphorus (P4) is indispensable for key industries such as in the food and pharmaceutical sectors and is therefore a strategic raw material of high relevance. In the FlashPhos project, the sustainable production of white phosphorus using sewage sludge will be demonstrated on a large scale.
ACCSESS – Providing access to cost-efficient, replicable, safe and flexible CCUS
ACCSESS takes a cross-sectorial approach to CO₂ Capture, Transportation, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS), working with Pulp and Paper, Cement, Waste to Energy, and Biorefining, all industries with big potential for carbon dioxide removal.
Development of a method to improve clinker cooling and to increase energy efficiency in cement rotary kilns by using infrared cameras
In the research project, infrared cameras are used to record the surface temperature of the clinker bed in the clinker cooler. Together with calculated enthalpy flows, this allows control room personnel to identify the operating condition of the cooler. This is used in operational tests to optimise the heat transfer in the clinker cooler by controlling the drive system and adjusting the cooling air distribution.
Optimisation of clinker-efficient cements by means of multimodal particle size distributions using energy-efficient products from separate ultra-fine grinding
Separate ultra-fine grinding of cement - Energy-efficient grinding meets optimised cement and concrete properties. Today, future-oriented cements can already be produced more sustainably and efficiently by using various components of different finenesses.
This training will provide knowledge of how to conduct and evaluate cement kiln and mill trials. Kiln and mill examinations are carried out in order to gather data on the performance and to validate warranty performance data such as the output, the energy consumption, input/output ratio or the efficiency. They also provide a reliable foundation for the optimisation of individual operational system components, the cement quality, the reduction of emissions levels and for assessment of material cycles and coating formations.
The SIMULEX® cement plant simulator for training plant supervisors, foremen, production personnel, control room operators and young engineers was developed by KHD Humboldt Wedag AG in cooperation with VDZ. For over ten years VDZ has been using the simulator within the framework of training courses and has been continually supporting the further development of the system with practical input from the industry. As a result, the simulator provides a realistic reconstruction of a cement plant with a state-of-the-art supervisory control and data acquisition system (SCADA).
Crash Course for Young Engineers and Young Scientists
The cement industry provides excellent job opportunities for young engineers and scientists. Training schemes introduce these new employees to cement technology, taking their different professional backgrounds into account. This online course provides a one-week in-depth training session which covers all relevant aspects of cement technology including chemistry, mineralogy and environmental aspects. Quality control as well as cement performance in mortar and concrete will also be covered.
