Fresh concrete properties and hardening behaviour of concretes with clinker-efficient cements CEM II/C and CEM VI
EN 197-5 defined the clinker-efficient cements CEM II/C and CEM VI. Technical approvals for the application of CEM II/C cements have been issued. For a widespread application, it is important that all parties involved develop confidence in the new products. With new findings on fresh concrete properties, hardening behaviour and durability two research projects of the VDZ Concrete Technology Department will provide an important basis for application of these cements in concrete for the construction industry.
Durability of concretes with clinker-efficient cements CEM II/C and CEM VI

For a wide application, all parties involved have to develop confidence in the new products. Participants will get a comprehensive overview of concepts for ensuring the durability of concrete structures. In addition to the damage mechanisms the concrete technology and design elements as well as the execution are explained. On the basis of examples the influence of the cement on durability-relevant parameters is going to be explained. Performance concepts and the principles of service life design are also addressed. For the participants it is possible to discuss their current issues from operational practice.
Recycled clay brick containing materials as a raw material in resource efficient cements and durable concretes
The topic of the research project is the utilisation of brick-containing materials from the recycling of mineral construction waste. It is being investigated whether and how resource-efficient cements can be produced with processed brick-containing construction waste and reduced clinker content, thus reducing process-related CO₂ emissions.
Durability of concrete according to the performance principle - classification of material resistance, production control (PC), conformity criteria and control (CC)
In this project, the systematic classification of the carbonation and chloride penetration resistance of concretes will be investigated. Based on these results, recommendations for action will be derived for production and conformity control within the framework of a performance-based durability concept.
With the decarbonisation of cement production and the expected reduction in blastfurnace slag and fly ash quantities, unburned limestone, calcined clays, and recycled fines will gain in importance as cement main constituents. The focus will be on new, clinker-effcient cement types such as CEM II/C and CEM VI cements, whose performance allows a wide range of
applications in practice. This seminar provides an overview of the current state of development and standardisation of new cements. The possibilities and limits for practical implementation will be presented.
The objective of the URBCON project is to reduce the consumption of primary raw materials and CO₂ emissions resulting from the construction and maintenance of buildings and infrastructure in urban areas. The project focuses on concrete as a building material.
Proof for durability of chemically stressed concretes and concrete components: Proof of concrete attacked by carbonic acid
In order to be able to use new, clinker-efficient cements and concretes in the future even under the attack of carbonic acid, the development of a test and assessment concept is necessary. Therefore, VDZ and the Institute for Building Research of the RWTH Aachen started a joint research project.
