Request publicationThe capture of CO₂ and its subsequent use and storage are essential elements of the cement industry's decarbonisation strategy. The capture of CO₂ from the flue gas is energy-intensive and complex. It can be carried out more easily and efficiently by maximising the CO₂ concentration in the flue gas. The separation of the calcination of the limestone in the raw meal from the burning process to produce clinker phases simplifies the accumulation of CO₂ in the flue gas significantly.

Executive Summary of the VDZ Study
VDZ's Education and Training Programme 2023/24 ranges from the teaching of technical basics to the imparting of special technical knowledge and education courses for managers. VDZ offers individual, tailor-made seminars on the topics of clinker and cement production, maintenance, quality assurance, environmental protection and concrete technology. Almost all seminars can also be designed and implemented as inhouse seminars according to individual customer requirements. In this new brochure you will also find two new seminar topics reflecting current developments in the cement and concrete industry.
In keeping with our time-honoured tradition, this year's edition of the "Environmental data of the German cement industry" again provides an in-depth insight into the use of raw materials, energy input and the various emissions produced by German cement manufacturers. This encompasses not only the dust and dust bound constituents, but also the inorganic and organic exhaust gas compounds. A further aspect of our environmental data is information on carbon dioxide emissions, the reduction of which is a particular focal point in connection with the decarbonisation of cement production.
We see diversity as an enrichment of our work and an opportunity for our company. Therefore, we strive for equal participation of all genders and cultures in our workforce.
In a CORNET (Collective Research Networking) research project, the project partners CRIC (Belgium), Smart minerals (Austria) and VDZ (Germany) had combined under the consortium leadership of the VDZ to determine characteristic variables for cement and mortar samples and correlate them with the results of concrete durability tests.
The aim of the C³ CarbonSpeed project was to create a guideline to complement the existing verification procedures of the building authorities (approval in individual cases, national technical approval) with a view to shortening the time required for the introduction of solutions with carbon concrete.
The aim of the current research phase was the elimination of market barriers through clear regulation.

The "Environmental data of the German cement industry 2020" prove that cement manufacturers are facing up to the environmental challenges of our time and informing the public about them in a transparent way. The focus is on the topics of climate neutrality by 2050, saving primary raw materials, and air pollution control.
VDZ's environmental data reflect that the German cement industry invests decisively in plant optimisation. This keeps them in a leading role worldwide in terms of environmental compatibility, alternative fuels and plant energy efficiency.
