Albrecht Schall, VDZ, discusses the ‘Zwolf’ and the role of maintenance in ensuring that cement kilns operate effectively. Published in: World Cement (2021) 12, 35-38
Short research report on IGF project 20656 N, in which the potential of separate fine grinding for practical use and separate fine grinding using scalable grinding plants was investigated.
In Germany, the costs of supporting renewable energies are spread out by means of reallocation to the power consumer in accordance with the renewable energies act (EEG). Firms with high electricity consumption can be partly relieved of this if they fulfil the strict quantitative and qualitative requirements of the EEG‘s special equalisation scheme. The aim of the scheme is to protect companies that use a lot of power due to the nature of their processes from losing their competitiveness vis-à-vis competing locations in other countries inside and outside of Europe. Recently there has been much heated discussion on the amount and distribution of costs under the EEG. Alongside the promotion of renewable energies, the relief of power-intensive firms has been subject to criticism. The present study by EEFA-Forschungsinstitut GmbH & Co. KG, Münster empirically investigates the international competition situation of the German cement industry in this context. The focus of the analysis is on the intensity of power costs for cement manufacture, the exposure of cement companies to international competition – both inside and outside of Europe – and the significance of EEG relief for the preservation of cement production and employment in Germany. The latter is evaluated in view of the expected effects of a potential increase in power costs on the sector and the German economy as a whole.

In keeping with our time-honoured tradition, this year's edition of the "Environmental data of the German cement industry" again provides an in-depth insight into the use of raw materials, energy input and the various emissions produced by German cement manufacturers. This encompasses not only the dust and dust bound constituents, but also the inorganic and organic exhaust gas compounds. A further aspect of our environmental data is information on carbon dioxide emissions, the reduction of which is a particular focal point in connection with the decarbonisation of cement production.
The "Environmental data of the German cement industry 2020" prove that cement manufacturers are facing up to the environmental challenges of our time and informing the public about them in a transparent way. The focus is on the topics of climate neutrality by 2050, saving primary raw materials, and air pollution control.
VDZ's environmental data reflect that the German cement industry invests decisively in plant optimisation. This keeps them in a leading role worldwide in terms of environmental compatibility, alternative fuels and plant energy efficiency.
